PEP+, PEP-Adultos, PEP-Scholars

'PEP' means Porvenir Enrichment Program

'PEP+', the Porvenir Enrichment Program 'plus', is HCA’s educational program for children in grades 1-6.

PEP+ began in 2010 as a program to teach English, but quickly evolved to include much more!

PEP+ has a professionally developed, project-based curriculum that focuses on literacy in Spanish, conversational English, and computer proficiency, while also incorporating art, science, teamwork and social skills.
The computer component helps children develop basic skills; using the mouse, keyboard, and word processing. The Spanish literacy component gives students an opportunity to practice reading and writing concepts that are taught in school. We focus on interactive project-based learning, and we use art to enhance literacy comprehension in both English and Spanish.

PEP+ operates in tandem with the public schools.

The children who attend our free PEP+ classes are in grades 1-6. Children attend their public elementary school as a half-day session in the morning or afternoon. Their PEP+ class operates opposite their public school schedule so that students can easily attend both. PEP+ is currently offered as a morning session and afternoon sessions three days a week at three locations around the community for a total of 6 groups of students.

Children work in small groups and get lots of attention!

The combined education-team of international volunteers and Honduran interns work together to prepare a well-planned and smoothly flowing program. The curiosity-based, interactive curriculum encourages creativity in how you and your 'compañeros' (coworkers) choose to work with your students. Using songs, art, movement, games and other fun activities, is one of the easiest ways for children to learn new skills and reinforce academics. Return to PROJECTS

PEP-Adultos

'PEP-Adultos' provides free English instruction for adults in El Porvenir

One day, back in 2012, several local police officers visited our PEP classroom in El Centro. At first, the volunteers wondered if something was wrong as the officers filed in wearing full uniforms and carrying large guns – – but no, something wonderful was about to happen!
As the volunteers greeted the officers, they politely asked if the volunteers would be able to teach them English. Of course we said yes and from there one of our most enthusiastic programs was born!
PEP-Adultos is taught by HCA volunteers 2X each week and offers evening classes for beginners to advanced students. Emphasis is placed on conversational English that would be helpful in regard to advanced education along with business and tourism employment. Being bilingual opens many doors in Honduras and our students are very dedicated. Return to PROJECTS

PEP-Scholars (for teens)

'PEP-Scholars' helps teen-students stay in school while also expanding English, computer, and leadership skills.

As the children in our program have gotten older, the PEP-Scholars program has evolved to help support our teen students in completing high school. For ages 12-18, this project helps the teenagers of El Porvenir advance their English speaking ability, computer skills, and so much more! The PEP-Scholars classes are activity-based to encourage the students to use their English in a practical way, to develop teamwork and leadership skills, and have a safe and motivating environment.
